ATOAI Awards

The ATOAI awards have been instituted to honour those who have contributed substantially in promotion of Adventure Tourism in India over the years.

INTRODUCTION
 

The ATOAI awards have been instituted to honour those who have contributed substantially in promotion of Adventure Tourism in India over the years. ATOAI hopes that these awards will provide inspiration and encouragement to those working to develop the cause of Adventure Tourism which is sustainable, responsible, safe and conductive to the successful conservation of the richness of India’s natural environment. Care has been taken to ensure that these awards are fair and free of any personal or political interests. ATOAI endeavors to make these awards a benchmark for recognition in adventure travel.

   
 
AWARD COMMITTEE / JUDGING PANEL
 
ATOAI has constituted a panel of 3 very eminent experts who will decide the winner of each category. Apart from these, the presiding president of ATOAI is a part of the award committee in the capacity of an observer only. The decision of the award committee is final.
 
CATEGORY OF AWARDS AND ELIGIBILITY CRITERIAN 
 
1.         Life Time Achievement Award for promoting adventure tourism
 
This award is to be given to an individual who has shown a consistent history of rare accomplishments in the field of promoting adventure and eco travel. This award is limited to senior members who have reached a pinnacle in the industry. There will be only one Life Time award given annually. This award is nominated by the Executive Committee.
 
Eligibility Criteria
 
The company, which the individual represent, should be an active member of ATOAI.
 
The individual should have at least 25 years of active experience in the field of adventure.
 
The individual should be an accomplished adventurer who is widely accepted as an authority in adventure travel.
 
The individual’s contribution to adventure tourism should have been recognized by national/international bodies for his/her achievements in the field of adventure.

2.         Hall of Fame
 
The ATOAI Hall of Fame award is given to an individual for any singular rare feat or accomplishment in the field of adventure travel. The award shall only be given once in a lifetime of an individual. This award is nominated by the Executive Committee.
 


Eligibility Criteria
 
The individual or the organization, he/she represents should be a member of ATOAI.

The individual should be a famous and accomplished adventurer who is widely accepted as an authority in adventure travel.
 
The individual should have accomplished a rare feat in the field of adventure travel (examples: longest ski traverse, highest bungee jump, deepest open water dive etc.)
 
The feat must be verified for its authenticity from independent sources so as to avoid controversy in later stages

3.         Award of Excellence for Best Practices in Adventure Travel
 
This award is be given to an organization that displays a high level of quality in procedures, policies, processes, enquiry handling, information to clients, staff training, equipment, field operations and commitment levels in practicing responsible tourism, environment conservation etc. This award is limited to private sector only.

Eligibility Criteria
 
The applicant should be an active member of ATOAI.
 
The applicant must have the DOT recognition under the Adventure Tour Operator category.
 
The applicant should demonstrate a commitment to environment conservation not only on the field but also in the office (examples:  brochures, collateral, printing, staff education etc.)
 
The applicant should display a high level of safety consciousness that covers all areas of RAM systems, Sops and staff training besides an established record of quality trip handling
 
Written and published material to prove claims that will also be verified from independent sources.

Verifications regarding the best practice from at least 10 clients handled in the immediate past year through a set standard procedure.

4.         Award of Excellence for Innovative Adventure Infrastructure Product

This award is given to an organization operating infrastructure prouducts anywhere in India. This award is open to all membership categories of ATOAI, semi-government and government organisation.


 

Eligibility Criteria
 
The applicant should be an active/allied/associate member of ATOAI.
 
The applicant should demonstrate a high level of quality and uniqueness in concept of running his adventure lodge/luxury camp.
 
The camp/lodge should have valid registrations/recognitions with the local authorities/tourism department/tax authorities at the time of application.
 
All documents pertaining to taxes such as Luxury tax/ VAT/ Service tax etc to be submitted with the application.
 
The Balance Sheet of last one year is to be submitted with the application.
 
Verifications from at least 10 clients handled in the immediate past year through a set standard procedure.
 
A written confirmation is to be given from the applicant to host the inspection team constituted by the ATOAI award committee to the camp without any obligation for necessary verifications and inspection.

5.         Award of Excellence for Capacity Building

This award is given to a company, NGO or a Government body that has achieved measurable capacity building targets in a local community in adventure travel.
 
Eligibility Criteria

The applicant must furnish details of the program, results achieved, placement measures taken and achieved, impact assessment etc. and other necessary details.
 
6.         Award of Excellence for Innovative Adventure Travel Concept

This award is given to an active member of ATOAI. The award will be given to an adventure travel company that has launched an innovative and unique adventure travel concept in India.
 
Eligibility Criteria
 
The applicant should be an active member of ATOAI.
 
The applicant must have the DOT recognition as approved “Adventure Tour Operator”.
 
The applicant must have sufficient proof of innovative tourism practices.

The applicant must furnish details like concept note, publicity material, website, safety and environment protection policies and client feedback from at least 10 clients in the last financial year according to a set standard procedure

7.         Award of Excellence for Adventurer of the Year

This award is given to an individual who has excelled in adventure sports/ activity in the past calendar year and has achieved recognition for his or her feat. The award is not limited to a member of ATOAI and is open to adventure activists of all age. This award is nominated by the Executive Committee.

Eligibility Criteria
 
The applicant must be able to furnish printed and or video proof of the feat. The committee will require media reports and other authentic sources to verify the claim. In case there are more than 1 applications for the same award then the jury will decide on set guidelines.
 
There should be irrefutable proof that a similar feat has not been achieved by an Indian in the same calendar year.
 
8.         Award of Excellence for Adventure Friendly State
 
This award is given to a State government for its support to adventure tourism and unrelenting efforts in making the state a friendly destination for adventure travel in India. This award is nominated by the Executive Committee of ATOAI.
 
Eligibility Criteria
 
The state government must have, over the past year undertaken projects / initiatives to promote adventure travel and implement policies that promote quality and safe adventure travel in the state.
 
SELECTION PROCESS FOR SHORTLISTING OF AWARDS
 

The Executive Committee of ATOAI reviews each application in detail and check for wrong claims or information. The applications are then forwarded to the judging panel of 3 eminent jurists with comments on each application. The EC has no right to reject any application.
 
Attempt is made to get atleast three applicants for each category. However in case this number is not fulfilled the award in that category may be dropped for the year. However, in an exceptional case and on recommendation of the EC, the application may still be forwarded to the Jury.
 
The judging panels of 3 eminent jurists’ shortlists awardees. The committee minutes each meeting and show a minimum 2/3rd majority for any award decision. The president of ATOAI is a member of the committee for technical purpose only and has no voting rights.
 
The decision of the committee is final. The Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI) reserves the right to change the criteria or the parameters for consideration and all other relevant provisions from time to time for selection of Awards.
