Wildlife - Tour in Kanha National Park

Location :
170 km from Jabalpur in Mandla & Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh.

Area : 1,945 sq.kms.

Altitude : 600-900 mt.

Temperature (deg C): Summer- Max 40.6, Min 23.9; Winter- Max 23.9, Min 1.1.

Best Time to visit: April to June and November to January. The park is closed from July to Mid November during monsoon.

Access :
By Air - The nearest airpost is Nagpur (270 km) which is well connected to other cities of India. From these airports one has to drive to the park.

By Rail - The nearest rail head is at Jabalpur(160 kms) and Nagpur.

By Road - To access the Kanha National Park there are two ways, via Khatia or via Mukki. From Jabalpur there are daily bus services to these places. From Jabalpur, Bilaspur and Raipur one can hire taxis to the park.

Introduction Kanha National Park, home to a variety of wildlife, one of India's largest national parks is a beatutiful area of sal forest and lightly wooded grassland, criss-crossed by numerous rivers and streams. Kanha National Park is also known as Kipling Country' is where all the jungle books of Rudyard Kipling were conceived. The tiger and the highland barasingha are it's honoured residents. 'Project tiger' got underway at Kanha and in 1974 the area was declared a tiger reserve.

The park was created in 1955 by a special law and since then it has dedicated itself to preserving wildlife, saving many endangered species in the process. Ideal dwelling ground to both predator and prey this 'tiger country' is among the most scenic reserves in the world. Months from November-June are favorable for visiting the park; still the best period is February-April.

Wildlife Species The different forms of wildlife that can be seen at the Kanha National Park are the tiger, bison, gaur, sambar, chital, barasingha, barking deer, black deer, black buck, chousihgha, nilgai, mouse deer, sloth bear, jackal fox, porcupine, hyaena, jungle cat, python, pea fowl, hare, monkey, mongoose, leapord, panther, etc. can also be seen here. Besides there are some 200 species of birds, making Kanha a bird watcher's paradise. Water birds like cattle egret, racket-tailed drongo, woodpecker, parakeet, etc can also be seen here.

The Kanha National Park in itself is full of adventure which makes other attractions unecessary. Bamni Dadar is one place which is visited by every tourist who comes to the national park. This also known as the sunset point.

Vegetation : Vegetation in Kanha National Park mainly compraises of Sal, Bija, Saja, Palas, Aonla, Dhawan, Garhi, Arjun, are the main tree species. The bamboo is found in the higher and lower elevations both and the Moghania spp is also found in the lower elevations.

Safaris Inside the Park Visitors can enter the core area only in the mornings on a jeep or in the afternoon. A forest department guide should accompany to help one enjoy the park better. Touring is usually allowed on jeeps, which are available locally.
