Ladakh

A remote tourist destination, Ladakh is still a naïve terrestrial of mountains and green land to discover. As a sparsely populated territory, Ladakh demonstrates a rich culture and history of Tibetan influence. 

Ladakh as a larger part of the Kashmir region is a Union Territory, formerly popular because of its trading provisions. The eastern part of Ladakh was controlled by the Chinese since 1962, until it became a Union Territory in 2019 with an act passed by the Government of India. 

As a young land of attractive scenic beauty, Ladakh is surrounded by the two most extensive mountain ranges, the Greater Himalayas and the Karakoram. A paradise for most adventure seekers, Ladakh is often confused as Leh-Ladakh. Yet, as a fact, Leh is a district and the largest town in Ladakh. Kargil is the other district.  

However, Leh is a land of fabulous landscapes, captivating sceneries, and picturesque locations. It is known as a popular tourist destination for its beautiful monasteries, fascinating nature and market places. Ladakh is also a famous destination for trek lovers.

Geography and Climate

Located in the uppermost region of the country, Ladakh as a part of Kashmir is bounded by Tibet in the east, Himachal Pradesh in the south, Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan in the west, and across the Karakoram Pass in the north. Ladakh extends from the Siachen Glacier in Karakoram range in the north to the Greater Himalayas in the south. It is the highest plateau in India with over 3,000m (9800 ft). 

Located near the glaciers, Ladakh experiences extreme weather conditions during the winter. The temperature goes below the freezing point. Witnessing desert type climate. Ladakh has dry wind blowing throughout the day and summer is hot and humid.

However, April to May is the peak time for tourism in Ladakh, while September to mid- October is considered the best season for a visit there to enjoy the scenic beauty and March is the stunning season for an adventurous trip.

Places to visit:

Pangong Lake- Located approximately at the height of 4350 meters, the blue Pangong lake is situated at Leh-Ladakh. Due to its altitude, the lake freezes completely during the winter. Also popularly known as Pangong Tso, a famous tourist destination, it is also a popular spot of shooting films, apart from a travel destination. As a unique factor, though known as the blue lake, the lake changes its color from azure to light blue to green and grey. The lake provides an enchanting view for all passionate travelers.

Zanskar Valley- A remote, yet, a mesmerizing location, the Zanskar valley is located in the eastern corner of Kashmir, separated from Ladakh by The Zanskar Mountain Range. The valley is special for its astounding sceneries, monasteries and trekking trails. The snow-capped glacier mountain peak with crystal clear water gushing down the valley, the valley has gained more popularity. 

Shanti Stupa Ladakh- A magnificent Tibetan structure, the Shanti Stupa is a white dome dedicated to Buddhism. The dwarfing altitude of the Stupa offers a breathtaking view attracting thousands of tourists from all over the world every year. During the full moon night, the Stupa is naturally illuminated with the moonlight providing a magnificent view.

Spituk Monastery- Located 18kms from Leh, Spituk is a beautiful Buddhist monastery with Indus Valley view below. A must to visit place for Buddhist followers, the Buddha idols and the attractive beauty of nature entice tourists from all over the globe. The monastery contains 100 monks and a giant statue of Kali. 

Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary- The second-largest nature reserve, Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary is located at an altitude of about 4000-9000 ft in the Changthang Plateau in the Leh District. It is home to a wide range of rare flora and fauna and animals. It also includes some of the highest lakes like Tso Moriri, Pangong Tso, and Tso Kar. The Korzok Monastery located near to the sanctuary is also an exciting highlight.
